Sunday, July 30, 2017. Tegal Waton Racecourse, Salatiga, was filled with thousands of spectators. The main event of the 51st National Horse Racing Championship Series I – Indonesia Derby was about to begin, featuring 12 of the best horses in the country competing on the prestigious 2,000-meter track.

At the gate stood a calm bay stallion wearing saddlecloth number 1: Kamang Chrome from Emeral Stable.

Trained by Mr. Amris, ridden by jockey Tripan Eri, and owned by Dr. Delfi, SpM, Kamang Chrome wasn’t the top favorite. But from the start, he radiated something different—calm, focused, and ready to shock the crowd.
 

The race was tight. But an unforgettable moment unfolded in the last 200 meters. Kamang Chrome, who had been trailing behind, exploded. He executed a perfect “coming from behind,” overtaking his rivals one by one with long, confident strides.

And the most spectacular moment? When he passed Xerxes Eclipse, the home favorite, just 50 meters before the finish line.

The track erupted. Cheers thundered. Supporters of Kamang Chrome were swept into an unforgettable euphoria as the son of Snap Happy and Britania secured the 2017 Indonesia Derby title.
 

Two years later, Kamang Chrome returned to the grand stage: the 2019 Indonesia Derby – 53rd National Championship Series I. This time, he entered a far tougher division: Open Class A, 2,200 meters.

Among his rivals stood one name that sent chills down anyone’s spine: Djohar Manik, the legend, the 2014 Triple Crown winner, one of the most feared horses in Indonesian racing history.

Many predicted the race would belong to Djohar Manik. But Kamang Chrome did not come to participate. He came to win.

From the start, he ran with confidence—leading by a margin, maintaining his rhythm, and holding strong even under pressure from Dragon Runner, another Derby champion shadowing from behind. As the fierce duel erupted in the final stretch, the entire grandstand rose to its feet.

With extraordinary stamina, consistent speed, and impressive control from his jockey, Kamang Chrome surged ahead—leaving Dragon Runner behind and rendering Djohar Manik powerless.

That day, the public witnessed the shocking truth: Djohar Manik, the Triple Crown champion, had been defeated by a horse from the Minang homeland.
